There are not many stove pipe boots in a cowboy style
to be found online or anywhere but I found a few to check out.
Stove pipe boots in a cowboy style don’t really exist now
days in their true form. These boots, which first appeared around
the mid 1870s, evolved from regular stove pipes boots and really
became the first tall cowboy boots.
Toe style was always round at this time. The boots were tall
almost coming up to the knee. They looked more like English riding
boots or how an Ariat field boot looks now. Stitching was later
added to the leather uppers to help strengthen the long boots.
Black was the only color available. Later leather cutouts of various
colors were added as well for the same purpose. This was followed
shortly by designs like the “V” cut in the boot top.
This design was the birth of the western cowboy boot.
The closest thing to stove pipe boots I’ve seen online
are from Tony Lama. They make styles 6297 and 6298, which are
both 17 inches tall. This is quite a bit taller than regular 12
to 13 inch common cowboy boot sizes. These basic black or brown
boots have a western look without anything fancy. Except they
have the old style mule ears to help pull them on. (Mule ears
are long hanging flaps that hang down the sides of the boot. I
think they are more for looks now then function. I personally
wouldn’t want them and if I had a pair of boots with them,
I’d cut them off or at least shorten them. That’s
just my taste.)
The next tall boots I suggest to check out would the Ariat English
riding boot collection. These are very tall boots that vaguely
resemble cavalry boots. However, there is no cowboy western boot
stitching or ornate decoration on them.
If you can live with a tall boot without the cowboy western stitching
and appearance, I also suggest you look at a Chippewa engineer
boot or harness boots by any manufacturer. While these are more
associated with motorcycle riding they do vaguely resemble stovepipe
boots and are worth comparing.
