Nocona snake cowboy boots come generally in two types
of snakeskin but before you buy you should be prepared to take
proper care of them or you’ll be throwing your money away.
Nocona snake cowboy boots can be found in two types of snakeskin.
The skins used are python and rattlesnake. You can get the python
in a back cut version, or a belly cut version. Most are natural
python skin in color but you can sometimes find a black dyed version
too. Both these have 13” leather shafts. I have seen a Nocona
python boot that was all snakeskin but the web site I found it
on was a “bait and switch” type. They didn’t
have half the boots they pictured available. This was probably
a picture of an older discontinued model. I feel it’s best
to buy from reputable online boot dealers or from new very well
organized sites.
The python skin boots by Nocona seemed difficult to find much
selection in. There is mostly one model available. I could easily
find python boots by Dan Post and Laredo in several models. Laredo
makes women’s snake boots as well which you don’t
see offered by most boot companies very often.
The Nocona rattlesnake boots use skins that are from the Eastern
rattlesnake or Western-Diamond back rattlesnake. These skins tend
to look very white when new. Once they become older the skins
will yellow from the sun and age. This is a good point to be aware
of because the yellowing cannot be reversed and happens with almost
all types of snakeskin no matter boot manufacturer makes them.
It’s important to note that snakeskin boots require more
care than many other leathers. The skin will dry out in the closet
if you don’t wear them enough. Central heat and air can
really beat them up. The rattlesnake scales particularly dry up
and get brittle if you don’t properly care for them. Dust
and dirt get in between the scales and they must be brushed regularly.
Be careful and with a soft brush lightly brush under the scales
to free the dirt from inside the creases. Use a conditioner and
apply thin coats at more frequent intervals to properly protect
your boots. Apply the conditioner with the scale grain and not
against it. Using polishes on rattlesnake is discouraged by some
boot companies so it might be best to contact Nocona for their
opinion on the best way to care for the type of skin you purchase.
