The classic mens Vibram lug sole is an aggressive and
durable tread that you need if you work in hazardous environments
or ride a motorcycle.
Many boot manufacturers use a Mens Vibram lug sole
on their boots
because these soles offer the best performance and protection
from harsh work and the road conditions you will encounter. The
typical Vibram lug sole on boots runs from a thickness of 7/8”
at the toe to 2” at the heel. These Vibram lug sole work
boots or motorcycle boots are thick enough to head off most obstructions
and have a tread that gives excellent traction in even the worst
conditions. Hence the reason you see them used in logger, lineman,
and wildland fire boots. It takes years of heavy use to wear them
out and you can get the boot soles resoled by qualified Vibram
shoe repair shops for usually around $50 to $75.
When searching for boots with a men’s Vibram sole, you
should check out these leather boot brands:Georgia , Chippewa, Justin,
Carolina, Wolverine, Tony Lama, Addison, Stanley, Thorogood, Mason,
Corcoran, Norcross, Wesco, Danner, Frye, Lacrosse and Browning.
As you can see these superb lug soles are used in the construction
of the very best shoes and boots. Some of my favorites Vibram
lug sole equipped boots come from Chippewa and Lacrosse. Chippewa
makes some of my favorite motorcycle boots. They have a cool look
and come with thick leather that makes them road worthy in my
view. Lacrosse has a rubber 16” Meta-Pac Vibram lug outsole
boot and an 8” oil-resistant 200-gram Thinsulate boot that
I like quite a bit. Or course I’m a big fan of Lacrosse
already so I think they can do no wrong with any of their boots.
Update: 5/26/2010 --- I recently bought a pair of Georgia Boots - Men's 6" wedge work boot in black . I absolutely love them. I needed a work boot I could stand in for a long time and not get foot fatigue from. These wedge soles have worked very well. I wear these a couple times a week and can easily wear them all day.
They are not fancy. It is a very stripped down boot. They are made basic leather and designed for a quick and easy lace up. The cushioned sole is what makes it though. And these particular soles are easy to clean.
At first I did not think I would like these Georgia boots. The Wedge sole seemed clunky to me. But I was totally wrong to think that. The sole was key to the comfort. They came recommended to me by a friend who is a boot expert. She works at a Boot Barn and has for many years. By the way, they are currently offering a deal on shipping. It should be noted that some of the natural rubber lug sole Vibram
equipped boots will mark or can scuff floors. Therefore you should
look for the synthetic rubber Vibram soles and not the natural
rubber lugs if this is a concern. They are more expensive but
worth it if you are wandering indoors with your boots on. Also
some Vibram sole work boots are non-oil resisting and will break
down if they come in contact with a lot of oil. If you need an
oil resisting sole, make sure the boot you plan to buy is fitted
with the resistant sole.
So whether you want a work or motorcycle boot, getting one featuring
a Vibram lug is the best way to go. You’ll be wisely investing
in the future of your feet and receiving a long lasting, strong
and stable sole that will serve you well.
